Strathaven's new Sainsbury's opens backing Fairtrade and local groups
16 MarchStrathaven was the first in Scotland to be awarded the Fairtrade mark and is now one of the country's biggest Fairtrade supporters. As Sainsbury's has recently been recognised as the world's largest retailer of Fairtrade, the Chairman of the Strathaven Fairtrade Group has been invited to cut the ribbon to officially open the store.
Margaret Morton, Chairman of the Strathaven Fairtrade Group, said: "Shoppers should have the right to ethically sourced products at affordable prices. Clearly the people of Strathaven want to know that producers are treated with respect and receive a fair wage for their products. To have a supermarket that believes in Fairtrade the way Sainsbury's does is a great thing for Strathaven and I'm looking forward to trying the range of Fairtrade products in store."
The 19,750 sq ft store will be the 41st Sainsbury's store in Scotland. James Farquharsson, store manager, said: "The new Sainsbury's is not just about offering customers a great range of products. It's also about getting stuck in to community life and supporting local organisations. We've started things off with the Strathaven Fairtrade Group and we plan to work with them to raise awareness of the importance of Fairtrade. We're all very proud to be opening in Strathaven and I hope that we will be able to support other local groups and organisations once we're up and running."
The new Sainsbury's store on Kirk Street opens at 9am on Wednesday 17th March, and will be open Monday to Saturday from 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am-8pm.
