Strathaven youngsters shine at Rotary International concert
11 Mar 2010This year's Rotary International Concert in the East Church, Strathaven was a huge success, with Chapelton Primary, Gilmourton Primary, Kirklandpark Primary, Sandford Primary, Wester Overton Primary and Strathaven Academy all taking part.
The event was an example of the wonderful musical talents of the children within the community. Not only was it an entertaining night but it also raised over £1,300 for International Aid.
At this week's meeting Natalie Hunter of Imagination Library spoke to the Rotary Club of Strathaven explaining that each month, from the day the child is born until his/her fifth birthday, a carefully selected book arrives by mail addressed to the child.
Get on Board, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library was developed in 1995 by Dolly for her native Sevier County, Tennessee, USA to aid literacy. Dolly wanted every preschool child to have his/her own collection of books. After much thought, Dolly decided to offer her Imagination Library for replication in any community that would financially support it.
Imagination Library was launched in the UK in 2007 and Rotary International formed a partnership in 2009.
Currently the organisation operates in ten communities in the UK and looking to expand. The club members asked many interesting questions and the vote of thanks was given by Joyce Waddell.
