Get on your bike for this year's Round Stra'ven 50
19 AugustThe 2010 edition of the Round Strathaven 50 will take place on Sunday 22 August. Last year's event was started off by 'The Flying Scotsman' himself, former World Hour-Record holder and one of the UK's finest ever time trialists, Graeme Obree, and it is hoped he will be back in 2010.
This charity cycle ride attracted around 250 entrants in 2009, and has now raised over £28,000 in the nine years it has been running.
The main route of 50 miles runs over the scenic country roads around Strathaven and through the surrounding villages of Sandford, Glassford, Chapleton and Auldhouse. The quiet circuit is well-signposted and marshalled by volunteers.
You can acquire a copy of the Round Strathaven 50 Guide in advance of the event to read up on sites of historical interest that lie along the way (cost £5, now in its second edition). A plentiful supply of carbohydrates, protein and fluids is available for free at selected points around the route in the form of delicious home-made cakes, biscuits, tea, coffee and juice.
Although riders as young as 10 years of age have completed the RS50, lesser distances are possible thanks to the design of the route which allows participants to return within just a few miles to Strathaven. There is also a very popular 15-mile circuit for families riding together, and for those who would prefer a lesser but equally worthwhile challenge. The 15-mile route is particularly recommended for younger children, with junctions selected for safe riding.
As usual, the RS50 is organised by the Friends of Strathaven Scouts (FOSS) and is run with the support of the members of the Rotary Club of Strathaven and other helpers. It is a sponsored event, and the monies raised this year will be shared equally between local Scout and Guide organisations and Health Help International, a charitable foundation working in developing countries.
Cyclists are asked to raise money through sponsorship, or to make a donation to these good causes payable on the day - minimum £15 for riders on the RS50, and the same sum for family groups on the RS15.
Both cycle runs will start and finish at the upper car park of the George Allan Park, off Threestanes Road, Strathaven, the 50-mile ride starting between 10am and 11am and the 15-miler between 1pm and 2pm.
For intrepid cyclists, it is therefore possible to tackle both the 50 and the 15. On the same day and over the same 50-mile course, although starting a little earlier, Irene Wilson of the Strathaven Striders is promoting the John Lucas Memorial Ultra Run, which is also held in support of our nominated charities.
