  • Today's Strathaven Academy

The original Strathaven Academy was opened in January 1905 by Thomas McKay, chairman of the school board. Avondale School board had decided to build the new school in 1902, merging two local primary schools - Crosshill and Ballgreen - to create the new Academy.

The red-brick block housing English, computing, home economics and art as well as the new sports centre was opened in 1983.

The original Strathaven Academy was demolished in 2007, with the original, main building having been supported largely by scaffolding for the last few years of its life.

The new Strathaven Academy building opened at the start of the 2009-10 session, and has a roll of approximately 850 pupils.

Currently the school has defpartments for Business Studies, English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Modern Studies, Geography, Home Economics, Technical Education, Art & Design, Physical Education, Modern Languages, Religious Studies, Support for Learning, Computing Studies & Information Technology and Music.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
