'A History in Stone'
'A History in Stone' is the latest production of Local Historian - Bob Currie.
This is a unique photographic record on CD of the tombstones and tombstone inscriptions erected in Strathaven Ol/Old New Graveyard. These are pictured in strict sequence following a circular route that leads the viewer upwards from the Old Graveyard gateway on Castle Street along the boundary wall to the entrance to the Old/New Graveyard then down again along the boundary wall back to the Castle Street gateway. The CD also presents a wide-ranging view of the tombstones in the cental area of each of these old burying grounds. The most ancient memorial is dated 1659, but among the most historic are those erected in memory of the Covenanting martyrs, James (Purlie) Wilson, Strathaven's martyr to polictical reform as also several memorials to local clergy e,g, Rev. William Proudfoot, Minister of Avendale Old Parish Church, and author of the Statistical Account of the Parish of Strathaven and Avondale (1835) and, not least, Rev. Alexander Rankin, founder of Rankin Church, Strathaven. The CD also features memorials to the merchant and farming families of the town and district and those of the mainstream of the community who were employed as weavers, clockmakers, bakers, carriers, coachmen, labourers and domestic servants of the eighteenth and 19th centuries. Each name on each memorial is unique as each memorial has its own story to tell.
This production is a must for those interested in both Local and Family History research. Available now (£6) from The Computer Shop, Barn Street, and Craig's Newsagents, Commongreen.
