You may have seen sixty people - children, young people, older folk- walking around the park on Sunday 5th October.

Some were carrying water bottles, but all walked around the park paths four times. Why? Members of the congregation of Strathaven Evangelical Church, young and old, fit and not-so-fit, set off to walk the four miles because Women and children will walk many miles every day to collect the water they use every day.

The average journey a child in Africa makes is four miles. The average family there uses ten litres of water a day for all their needs - drinking, cooking and washing.

The Christian relief organisation - Samaritan's Purse - aims to raise money to help the millions of people across the world who do not have access to a safe and clean water supply.

Millions die from preventable diseases caused by drinking dirty water, many under the age of five. One child dies every twenty seconds from diarrhoea related illnesses. The money raised is used to provide water pumps, water filters and other means using local labour and materials..

The church raised £1,500 which will be spent on buying water filters, sinking boreholes, and building sanitation in Africa.

News from Strathaven Evagelical Church January 2009.

Strathaven Evangelical Church will welcome their first pastor-teacher in February 2009. George Crory and his wife Joan will take up the post for a six month period from February, and the church will officially welcome George and Joan on Sunday 1st February.

George was formerly a pastor with the Irish Baptist Union, and is looking forward to coming to Strathaven and working with the church. Their previous church was Moira Baptist Church in Northern Ireland.

George and Joan also spent nine years working as missionaries in France, and Joan has written a book about their experiences in France titled "A French Adventure". They have three children and six grand-children, and have settled into a home in Strathaven.

George will speak in the church on three Sundays a month, and assist in the pastoral work of the fellowship. Part of George's remit will be to assist the church as they move in due course to appoint a permanent pastor-teacher.

Just prior to Christmas, the church was filled for the funeral of Jim Macfarlane, who for many years was a key member of the Evangelical Church, and also the Gospel Hall which used to meet in the building.

Jim passed away at the age of 93 years, and is remembered with great love, affection and respect by the members of the church.

There are also many Stravonians who will remember Jim as Head of the Parks in the town for many years, and his pastoral care for many in the town. His name will continue to remembered for many years as the sponsor of the cup for the First Local Home, presented during the Crags Race each Gala Day.

A walk past the premises on Lethame Road will also show the major stone restoration work recently completed on the 140 year old building. These extensive works have involved hacking out the old pointing, repointing and cleaning the stonework, and all the members are agreed that the results are quite excellent!

The colours of the masonry have been thrown back into sharp relief, and the congregation is very pleased with the work done during the four week project by Davie Deacon Stonemasons of Airdrie. In addition to the stonework, work has been carried out to overhaul the roof and make the building sound & watertight.

We're delighted to announce that George & Joan Crory will be returning to work with us for a further six months, from November 2009 through to April 2010.

The Evangelical Church is looking forward to the visit of Scottish evangelist Ian Leitch to the town on the 3rd & 4th October.

Ian has spoken in many countries around the world, but, following a trip to Romania, he will be sharing in the Harvest Dinner, which will be held in the church at 7.00pm on Saturday 3rd October.

In addition to a 'Harvest themed' meal, Ian will briefly talk about the significance of Harvest.

He will also speak at the Harvest Thanksgiving Service in the church on Sunday 4th October at 11.00am. All are, of course, welcome to these events. Tickets will be required for the Saturday dinner, and further details can be had from Andrew on 07913 759163.

Following a successful period with temporary Pastor-Teacher George Crory, the church is delighted that George & Joan have agreed to return for a further six months after an extended holiday visiting relatives in Canada.

George will return to ministry in November. Regular readers of the 'Echoes' will remember that Joan shared her very favourable 'first impressions' of the town some months ago - so obviously nothing has happened to change their minds too much!

There was great encouragement recently when two of the young men in the church were baptised by immersion, with the church packed with members, friends and families to witness this significant event.

Sadly, the ASK Bus that has been a familiar part of the evenings in the town has now ceased it's travels. Many young (and not so young!) people in the town have been greatly helped by the company, friendship and tea & toast handed out by the ASK Team.

However, the time has come to 'move on', and the ASK Team would like to thank all in the town who have supported and encouraged their work.

Christmas & New Year round-up

A chance to reflect for a moment on a very busy, and exciting, series of Christmas events.

Church members & friends spent some time carol singing around around a number of streets in Strathaven, with a very welcoming receoption 'on the doors'. Led by our pastor, George, an invitation to the various services, a 'Glory to the New-born King' booklet and little gift of sweets were handed out.

Many thanks to the friends from the Salvation Army, who added their muscial ability to aid our own 'band'- a really chilly, but enjoyable- evening!

Following the visit of 'The Camels, our children presented a great Nativity play at the Family Service before Christmas, and our young people stole the show with their 'Bethlehem Hero' awards ceremony- which saw the church transformed into a TV studio, and the popular winners being (not surprisingly!) Mary, Joseph, shepherds & Three Wise Men....

The traditional Carol Service on Christmas Eve was well attended by friends from the local community, leading into the Christmas Day service, where the kids (old & young) brought their favourite new toys.

On New Year's Eve, reflections were shared together of God's great goodness & blessing over the year. And 2010 was brought in with prayer for each other, for the church and for the town of Strathaven.

2010 has started in the same busy vein, with plans already underway for a special collection for Haiti Disaster Relief, to be channelled through TEAR Fund. In addition to the normal programme of services, the church is planning to hold an Easter Holiday Bible club for school children- keep an eye on S1Strathaven for further details in due course.
