Adams Community Trust (ACT)
Adam's Community Trust (ACT) was established in 2007, in memory of Adam Law who died in 2006.
Adam was Mr Strathaven, from the voice of the duck race to everyone's Santa, Adam was known througout the community that he worked so tirelessly to improve.
ACT has been established by the people of Strathaven and its surrounding communities for the benefit of those communities. It is a community organisation run by local people to support and develop projects that benefit the Strathaven area.
ACT has been established because there are so many good things about these communities and so much more we would like to see. ACT believes in working with local authorities, bodies and community groups to make the changes and improvements happen - we can make these changes ourselves, we will ACT.
ACT became a Registered Charity and Company by Guarantee in August 2008.
What is ACT doing?
ACT completed its first project - lighting up the trees in Allison Green from dusk till dawn in April 2008. It is a lovely sight to see and we have had many wondeful comments on how it 'brighens' up the town centre!
The second project was completed in March 2010, this was to build a brand new toddler playpark beside the Barrie Shelter. Throughout the early part of 2009 a cross-section of primary and nursery children were involved in the choice of play equipment to be installed. We then made applications to REF and Viridor for substantial funding & we were very grateful to receive £50K from these sources, a fantastic achievement. This along with previous funds raised from local people & groups ensured we had sufficient funds to complete this wonderful project.
Since opening in March the playpark has been put to great use, from the swings to the slides to the bouncers they are a real hit with the kids.
Our focus is now to replace the main play park situated at the top of the George Allan park with new and exciting adventure playground that will benefit all our children and families for years to come. The plans have been drawn up & again the equipment will be chosen by the local school children thus giving them a sense of ownership for this project. Look out for the new plans in the local press over the next few months.
What will ACT do next?
Beyond these initial priorities ACT are considering further improvements to Allison Green and will be looking to engage widely with the community to understand what other projects it can help raise and gain funding for. ACT is for all of us.
AS ACT moves forward it will be up to the people of Strathaven what ACT will do. ACT wants the involvement of everyone - individuals and community-based organisations.
How can you help?
The answer is simple - support ACT! You may have time, skills and desire to join the committee and help organise fund-raising events, run or co-ordinate a whole or part project or be able to offer invaluable advice. You may be able to invest a lot of time or just a few hours. Every bit helps.
The more people that get involved the more ACT will represent all our interests.
